Known as “The Hitchcock House” named after the original owner, Charles Hitchcock. Charles Hitchcock graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College. His father, Edward Hitchcock, was president of Amherst. Charles Hitchcock taught at Amherst, Yale, and Andover Theological Seminary. He was the state geologist for Maine. He moved to HI and into this house with his family upon retirement. He was one of America’s leading scientists for the late 19th century.
In 1909, Charles Hitchcock bought land from the Trustees of Oahu College for $1,275, part of the College Hills residential subdivision. The house was built in 1912 with key Prairie School architectural elements including a hipped roof with overhanging eaves, arched inset porch with square clad columns, and floors, 4” tongue and groove clear fir of old grown grain quality.
